Definition of Alt Threes



What does the term "alt threes" mean in the world of basketball betting? What is meant by the term "alt threes"?

Sportsbooks will allow you to bet on how many three pointers that you think a player will hit over the course of a game. This is usually shown as the "Player Threes Made" line.

Sportsbooks will also allow you to bet on alternative "Threes Made" lines for players - these lines are either below or above the main "player threes made" line.

Some of the "alt Threes" lines for Donovan Mitchell might be 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 4.5 and 5.5 Threes.

So, the Alt 2.5 Threes Made line for Donovan Mitchell might look like this:

Over 2.5 Threes, -225
Under 2.5 Threes, +174

Another "alt line":

Over 4.5 Threes, +200
Under 4.5 Threes, -245

So, if you think that Mitchell is going to have a big game, you'd probably want to target the Over 4.5 Threes line, which has a nice payout of +200, meaning that you would receive $200 in profit for every $100 that you wagered.

Some people like to "ladder" these Alt Threes wagers.

For instance, if you think that Mitchell is going to have a very big game with 7 Three Pointers made, you could made a significant amount of money targeting the Over 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 lines. Bettors will often place wagers of declining amounts on the "Over" lines, targeting a very big payout if their targeted player ends up posting a very big game from Three Point Land.
