Definition of Proposition or Prop Bet

Proposition bets, or prop bets for short, are also known as exotic and side bets.

A side bet is a wager on the outcome of a game, match or race that is not an essential aspect of betting on it. For instance, when betting an NFL game, a side bet could be a wager on how many total yards the QB will have.

Side bets have been around as long as sports wagering has, but they’ve become particularly popular during the Internet age. Many online bookmakers will use these prop bets to entice their clients as a match unfolds.

Sometimes, the terms exotic and side are used interchangeably. Usually, however, exotic refers to wager that stands apart from the game itself. For instance, during the Super Bowl, many place exotic bets on the halftime show, the commercials and even the weather during the game. Exotic bets are usually low skill but high payout.

Proposition bets are more than “just for fun.”

Side bets, during a game in particular, often provide the savvy sports bettor with an opportunity to place wagers with favorable odds. Used wisely, these prop bets can even be a way to offset an impending loss.
