Definition of Yellow Card Amnesty

What is the Yellow Card Amnesty in the game of football? What does it mean?

The yellow card amnesty is a rule within the English Football Association that punishes players who accumulate five yellow cards from the beginning of the season up to December 31st, with a one match suspension. The rule also bans players for two matches, if they accumulate ten yellow cards up to the second Sunday in April.

As Liverpool FC were chasing the title in the 2013/14 season, their captain and playmaker, Steven Gerrard, had to be extra cautious for a total of four games, including the big match against Manchester City, as he already had nine bookings to his name.
