The leader of the Tour de France race gets to wear the yellow jersey.The rider with the lowest total time, gets to wear the Yellow Jersey at the start of a new stage.

At the end of the race, the rider who has the lowest overall time across all stages, wins the Tour de France and the Yellow Jersey.

The color yellow was chosen because the newspaper that originally sponsored the Tour de France, L'Auto, was printed on yellow paper.
