Sports Nicknames - Captain America, American Sniper

Christian Pulisic is one of the most famous American footballers in the modern day. Having broken through the ranks at Borussia Dortmund as a teenager, he now plays for English giants Chelsea at the age of 22. Seen as the "next big thing" for the American national team, Pulisic has been nicknamed "Captain America" by fans back home.



Pulisic was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, spending the majority of his childhood there. At the age of 16, Pulisic signed for the Borussia Dortmund youth team. He only played for this team 15 times before being called to the senior side. While he wasn't used much in his first season, the next 2 years saw his involvement grow even more. He helped Dortmund win the 2017 DFB-Pokal.

Such form led him to be signed by Chelsea for $73 million (£57.6 million), making him the most expensive North American player of all time. Pulisic's time at Chelsea has been hampered by injury, but he has still played well. Especially upon return to league play during the COVID pandemic, Pulisic could not be stopped. He scored the first goal in the FA Cup final, which Chelsea eventually lost to Arsenal.

Pulisic has played for the United States at all levels, with 34 appearances at the first team level. In this time, he has scored 14 goals. Pulisic was also the youngest player to ever captain the United States in a match versus Italy in 2018.

"Captain America" has had a rough time in England due to his frequent injuries. However, he has also shown what he can do when in-form. Only 22, one can only hope that this young American can pass these injuries by and reach his true potential.

Since the start of the 2023/24 season, Pulisic is representing the colours of AC Milan, where he has been nicknamed the "American Sniper" after his debut game, after scoring a stunning goal.
