Sports Nicknames - CR7, Ronnie

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro. Simply known as CR7 to many thanks to his association with that kit number. One of the greatest players the world has ever seen. He's been scoring goals and winning trophies for over a decade, with some wondering at this point if he is a man or more akin to a Terminator-like machine.



CR7 began his career at Sporting CP in Portugal before being picked up by Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United at the age of just 18. There, he was given the famous 7 shirt that had been worn by players like David Beckham and George Best. Ronaldo became famous at United for his dribbling skills and later his goal scoring threat.

All of his United exploits led to a world record bid from Real Madrid in 2009, for £80 million (€94 million). Here he would develop as more of a striker and less of the dribbling winger he had been at United. And goals he would score. He scored an astonishing 450 goals in 438 appearances for the Spanish giants.

In 2018, he sought a new challenge, moving to Italian giants Juventus. The amount of titles and trophies that he has won is almost too long to list, but some highlights are the 3 Premier League titles, 5(!) Champions League titles, 2 La Liga titles and 2 Serie A titles as well as the UEFA European Championship and 5 Ballon d'Ors.

Ronaldo will go down as one of the best players football has ever seen. Whether he is the best of all time will be debated, as it continues to be a fight between him and Lionel Messi. But fair to say, CR7 deserves to be in that fight.
