Sports Nicknames - Radio Wanker

Jamie Vardy might hold numerous records, but perhaps the biggest and most unofficial one is his extraordinary rise to the top of the Premier League. Starting as a non-league striker and working his way up to Premier League Champion is a tale that few can claim, but Vardy most certainly can.

Vardy was released by Sheffield Wednesday and played for non-League teams like the Stocksbridge Park Steels, FC Halifax Town and Fleetwood Town up until 2012, when he was signed by Leicester City for £1 million - a record for a non-League player.

Vardy suffered some form dips during his first season, but bounced back the second one as Leicester fought their way to the top of the Championship and got promoted to the Premier League. He helped them stay up in 2014-15, but it was the legendary 2015-16 season under Claudio Ranieri that he burst into the limelight. He scored in 11 successive matches, breaking Ruud Van Nistelrooy's record of 10. Hewas the second highest goal-scorer that year, finishing one goal behind Harry Kane. It was reported that Ranieri's nickname for Vardy was "Radio W*anker" because of how much he talked.

Since that season, Vardy has continued to perform at the highest level. He scored 20 goals in the league again in 2017-18 before finishing as the Premier League top scorer for the 2019-20 season at age 33 - another record.

Vardy is one of the few left at Leicester from that legendary title-winning season. He continues to lead from the front, scoring and assisting goals with his high speed and workrate. Now 34, it seems unlikely that he'll be able to keep this up for much longer. But until then, as the Leicester fans say: Jamie Vardy's having a party.
