Roger Federer has been considered the best to ever play tennis for some time. Because of his longevity, prowess and seeming effortlessness to win many tournaments, he has picked up nicknames like "The Swiss Maestro", "King Roger" and "The Mighty Federer".

Federer started his career brightly, racing through youth tournaments and defeating the four-time defending champion and all-time Grand Slam leader Pete Sampras at the 2001 Wimbledon Championships. He didn't win that tournament, but won the 2003 edition. This would end up being one of his 20 Grand Slam tournament successes. 8 would come at Wimbledon, 6 at the Australian Open, 5 at the US Open and 1 at the French Open.

While Federer dominated the 2000s, his career stagnated somewhat in 2013 and 2016, as injuries and losses of form took their toll. Federer fell in the rankings and started losing matches that he really shouldn't have. However, in 2017 he had somewhat of a renaissance, winning 2 Grand Slam titles. In 2018, Federer won his 20th major title and spent 310 weeks at No. 1 on the men's tennis rankings. In 2020, Federer once again underwent knee surgery and it forced his withdrawal from the 2021 Australian Open.

Federer is now almost 40 and the injuries throughout his career are going to take a toll at some point. However, he has led the way alongside Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal as part of the "Big 3" for 2 decades. An active philanthropist and gracious even in defeat, Federer has to be recognized as one of the all-time tennis greats, if not the best.
