Sports Nicknames - The Red Beard, La Barba Roja

Xabi Alonso was one of the key members of the Spanish national football team that dominated European and World football in the past two decades.



During his playing days, Xabi Alonso earned his nickname "The Red Beard" or originally in Spanish, "La Barba Roja" because of his trademark beard that he has sported for a good part of his career.

He is one of the most decorated players of his generation as he has won the titles in Spain with Real Madrid and in Germany with Bayern Munich as well as the UEFA Champions League with the Spanish giant as well as with Liverpool.

On the international stage, Alonso won the FIFA World Cup and two European Championships with the Spanish national team.

In 2017, at the age of 36, Alonso decided to put an end to his playing career and dedicate himself to coaching.
